So yesterday Gareth gave today Gareth the task of writing a song and we are going to try and take a very open approach to this. We’re not going to spend a lot of time, we’re going to try and get it done in just a few minutes, which means we need to pick a topic, write some words and be done with it fairly quickly. That means I don’t think I have the time to write a tune or a melody. Instead, maybe I’ll just pick another song and then come up with words to fit that tune.
Do we go really bold and use the DJ function on Spotify to pick the song? I think we do. I think that’s the best way to do this. So I’m going to take a moment here, open Spotify, click DJ, and then the first song that plays is going to be the one that I’m going to write some words for. Give me a moment, I’ll be right back.
Well jackpot. Human Feel, by Deane. Oh, this is this is interesting. I just had a listen to this song. It’s 2 minutes and 46 seconds long. It’s not especially complicated, it’s just a bit of a beat with a voice sung over the top. Doesn’t feel extremely intimidating and I’m just listening and seeing if there are any ideas that come to the top of my mind. And the first one to arrive is a song about waiting for a message from someone that you’re interested in, that feeling of life being on pause while you wait for the the ping.
All right, I think we’re committed. Let’s have a go. I’m starting at 7.52, we are aiming for speed! Check in at 8.21, it’s easy to get stuck writing a song. Ok, let’s try and wrap this up quickly, I can see why people end up in group two!
Looking for things I can’t find
Wandering through my own mind
Trying to feel, to understand
reaching out for my own hand
Glancing again at my phone
Can’t leave the damn thing alone
Evade life until it dies
Then realise
That I
I’m on pause, waiting for the chime
A sign from you, you might still be mine
Downloading, doom scrolling lost in time
Reply to me
Reply to me
Reply to meMy mind begins to question
Whence came this chat obsession
When will I learn my lesson?
Swipe and set you to silent
Face down and no vibration
Silence so scratchy and loud
I can’t work, I cant focus
Snatch up my phone
Reread my text
And I
I’m on pause, waiting for the chime
A sign from you, you might still be mine
Downloading, doom scrolling lost in time
Reply to me
Reply to me (reply to me)
Reply to me (reply to me)I can’t move I cant breathe
Is something wrong, I don’t understand
Why don’t you reply to me? I’m here, phone in hand
Waiting for the chime, just waiting for the chime
Ok, I am done at 8.32 – that’s not too bad. I just wrote a song called “Reply to me”.
