I’ve got the growingly clear feeling that i should have a plan. And not just any plan. I need a plan which tells me what I’m meant to be doing so I can work out whether or not I’m on time, behind time, or ahead of time. At some low-level I have the sense I’m OK. This evening I’ve removed the last of the ground floor radiators. Draining each one, unfastening the lugs holding it to the pipework, tipping out the dirty horrible water inside and carrying them to a little zone in the kitchen now call my radiator zone.
With the radiators removed from the wall my next step is to remove the tank and boiler from the cupboard upstairs. Once that’s done I’ll then remove the wall the boiler and heat hot water tank were connected to. The wall forms an L shape on the inside of the upstairs toilet and once it is removed I’ll have the beginnings of the space to form the upstairs bathroom. Bathroom is probably a misnomer because I don’t think I’m going to have a bath, instead I will make a nice upstairs shower room with a walk in shower toilet sink et cetera.
Once the wall upstairs has been removed I can then remove the wall downstairs. As I talk about these things they all feel like things I can get done in a few minutes but since I’ve finished work I’ve spent most of the evening draining and removing radiators and I’m not even entirely sure I’ve got all the ones downstairs out yet. It feels like every time I walk around a corner there’s another radiator. When the new system is in there will only be eight sources of heat around the whole house. four of them in bedrooms and so I’m a little cautious about just how many radiators are going.
I think I’ve just talked myself into making a more explicit task list in the morning and then printing it out and putting it somewhere visible so I can begin to tick off the different things that I need to do to get myself to a place where I can begin seriously installing the new heating system. Beyond removing these walls, the old tank and boiler, I also need to lift some of the floorboards so I can work on piping and I need to lift some of the ceiling to work on ductwork and piping in ceiling spaces. These tasks don’t take long but at the current rate? I mean, we’re already at the beginning of September.
We’re agreed? I’m going to make a plan in the morning and try to itemise all of the things I need to do in between where I am now and when I call the energy company to get them to come and certify my new heating system. Right now my fingers are aching again and I am appreciative of the opportunity for some physical work. One of the plus sides of physical work is I’m looking forward to going to bed at 10:00 PM and I’m really rather confident I’m going to sleep well.
From 8:00 to 10:00 it was games with R&M. This is a regular Wednesday evening slot and it’s a lot of fun to jump on a Discord call and then get a few turns in for whatever game we’re playing at the time. I’ve not played Bretonnia before and so getting used to this faction is taking some time but towards the end of the gaming session I was beginning to make some more movement and acquiring some more territory which is always a positive feeling. That said, I can’t help feel that I’m a little bit behind the curve.
