It is 6:58am Monday morning and I have a few thoughts about yesterday and today. My first is the new heating system is due to be delivered sometime today and that’s really exciting. That’s going to consist of an air source heat pump, 5 or 6 wall-mounted heater and cooler units and then a bunch of pipes and tubes and a 300-litre hot-water tank. I’ve got the dimensions for all of these things but I think it’s going to be so much easier to think about where I’m going to put them, how they’re going to be situated what sort of space requirements they have.
Particularly the air source heat pump itself, where am I going to put that? Is it going to go on the ground outside, on the wall, off the ground and onto a rack? I’ve got the dimensions, I’ve had a think, but I’m really excited to see the thing in person and then be able to get a sense of it. I feel like my spatial sense will will mean it’s much easier to conceive of where I’m going to put everything once I’ve actually got it in-hand.
The other piece of good news in that context is that the suppliers have told me that as long as I’ve got the pump, the tank, and at least one of the heaters installed then they can commission that as a system so I don’t I don’t need to do everything inside of the next 2 1/2 months. I just need to get that done and that feels much more achievable than getting everything finished in the time available.
The other big update is yesterday afternoon I thought I’d get started taking down the wall between the kitchen and the dining room. When I went around and spoke to some of the other homeowners on the street one of them has renovated three of the houses on the street and he was very reassuring to speak to.
He explained the wall between the kitchen and the dining room is not a support wall, although it is made of a breeze block, it’s actually just a feature wall. When the houses were built the buyers had the option of either having a doorway between the kitchen and the dining room or a service hatch. In my case I had a I had a door between those two rooms and so I started by knocking out some of that door frame and then he said “tap them out” I wasn’t tapping, I smashed a bunch of those bricks to pieces.
I laid the large chunks in a pile in the front garden and bagged the rest of it. I made a lot of mess and didn’t move my clothes, my bedding, my shelves, I didn’t clean the kitchen, it was absolute disaster from a preparation point of view. Have I learned this lesson? Not sure.
However, as I sit here this morning I am now in my kitchen diner. A small detail here is that it seems quite clear that the kitchen half does not have the parquet floor while the dining room half does and so I need to look at the levels and decide what I’m going to do. It may be that I decide eventually to take the whole floor out and put in some underfloor heating or an engineered-wood floor but those are decisions for the future.
I’ve only just encountered this problem and so only just found out that I’m going to have to do something about the floor in these two rooms. Scratch that – room! I guess I could go around to some of the neighbours and see if I can get enough spare parquet together to parquet the rest of the floor but this relies on the level and I just don’t have enough information yet and I’m going to have to mop and swab and vacuum for another day or two before all of this dust is gone.
So there you have it I think I’ve made more material progress in the last 48 hours than I have in the preceding month maybe two months.
