UK Budget Cuts

As a person employed by the Public Sector I clearly have an interest in the spending cuts which are already arriving from the new Coalition government. Reviewing the outline plans announced an hour ago raises an ugly question. What was the previous government doing?

Spending money by all accounts. Lots of it.

The 6.2 Billion pounds worth of cuts set out today are a warning shot fired across the bow of a public sector obsessed with growing their mini empires and expanding their budgets. As a result of this first strike thousands of people will lose their jobs. Yet ministers stress that this is only a beginning and that a far more serious and aggresive series of cuts will follow in the Emergency budget June 22nd.

Current UK government spending.

In sum and total this is of course a good thing. However, if you are the person out on a limb with a mortgage to pay and a family to support it’s a little harder to appreciate the big picture.
